How the debt snowball calculator works
- List every debt except your mortgage — balance, interest rate, and roughly how long is left. Add any extra amount you can put toward debt each month.
- The plan attacks your smallest balance first while paying minimums on the rest. The moment a debt is gone, its entire payment rolls onto the next-smallest balance — the snowball that gives the method its momentum.
- You get your debt-free date, total interest paid, and how many months and dollars you save versus paying minimums only.
Why smallest-balance-first works
The debt snowball method, popularized by Dave Ramsey, pays the smallest balance first rather than the highest interest rate. The "avalanche" (highest-rate-first) saves slightly more interest on paper, but the snowball usually wins in real life: eliminating a whole debt quickly gives you a motivating win that keeps you going. Money is emotional — the best plan is the one you actually finish.
Frequently asked questions
Is this debt snowball calculator free?
Yes — completely free, with no account and no email. Your numbers are saved only in your own browser.
Debt snowball vs. avalanche — which is better?
The avalanche (highest interest first) saves a little more in interest. The snowball (smallest balance first) gives faster wins and better follow-through, so most people finish sooner in practice. This calculator uses the snowball.
Should I include my mortgage?
No. The snowball covers consumer debts — credit cards, car loans, student loans, personal loans. Paying off the house early is a separate, later milestone.
